I have this sentence:
Buy your mother a bouquet of flowers for her birthday.
I need to find the direct and indirect object. Can you help me? I'm not sure how to find these things.
If there are any "rule's of thumb" I need to know, I'd love if someone could mention them.
Can you help me with direct and indirect pronouns?
mother is the indirect
bouquet of flowers is direct
direct is who or what is acted upon by the verb
indirect is who or what the direct object is acting on
for example:
i gave you the ball.
i gave you what? the ball. so ball is the direct object.
I gave the ball to whom? you. so you are the indirect object.
Reply:the subject is you. what are you doing? Buying a BOUQUET OF FLOWERS which would be the direct object. For whom are you buying the bouquet of flowers? for your MOTHER which is the indirect object.
Reply:You have to have a direct object, but not every sentence has a direct object.
If you can insert 'to' or 'for' before the word, that's your indirect object (you may have to shift word order a bit to make it make the most sense).
Ask yourself who is receiving the object?
Think about it for a minute, then see below ...
YOUR MOTHER is the direct object.
Reply:Dear Saira,
(You) buy your mother a bouquet of flowers for her birthday.
Ask yourself, you buy what? FLOWERS
Buy is the verb. The direct object comes after the action
verb in a sentence. Flowers is the direct object. To find the
indirect object ask yourself: You buy flowers for whom?
MOTHER is the Indirect Object. Direct object answers what? Indirect object names the person (or thing)to whom
(or to what) or for whom(or for what) something is done.
Reply:First locate the subject, then the verb. So in this case the subject is the understood (you). The verb is "buy".
Then ask yourself the question "what"? What are you buying? So in this case, you are buying a bouquet of flowers.
Then ask yourself the question "for whom"? For whom are you buying the flowers? The answer is your mother.
Hint: 99% of the time, indirect objects are people. Direct objects are usually things.
Hope this helped! Good luck!
