How do you tell someone you want a birthday present?

My birthday is in about a week. I have been dating this guy for a couple of years now. He is already saying to day that he "doesn't have much money." Is that okay? I mean I am not the girl who likes expensive gifts and when asked I will usually say "Get me nothing." But, this time I want something. How do you let someone know that they really "need" to get you something? I never have problems doing anything for him or anyone, so I think a gift is well deserved. Plus, we have been through a lot of drama (with other issues) over the past few months regarding "family issues...baby mama drama." I think I deserve something. Am I being selfish? Anything will do, even a card and flowers, or cook me dinner. I am not picky, superficial (I don't think) nor a gold digger. But, I do want something.

How do you let someone know in a very polite way to save money for your birthday? And, how do I do it without making myself like a spoiled brat (even if I am a spoiled brat)?

your not a spoiled brat. i know if your guy had a b-day comming up he would like the idea of receiving a gift. he should at least get you a card or a rose, he cant just go on with out giving you anything. and no you are not being selfish. i know if he had a b-day comming up you would give him a gift. let us know what he gets you.
Reply:You are probably too nice, tell him. This guys does not seem right for you anyway. I'd say about 80% of guys will automatically buy the girlfriend a birthday present without asking. So you actually have a boyfriend who might be making excuses to not having money. He can always borrow or work.
Reply:I think the idea of a home cooked meal was fabulous also maybe a backrub something that doesn't cost a thing. They really don't know that most often, we are just happy with their time do they? :) I don't think you are being selfish, however he is not a mind reader, so don't be mad if you get "Just nothing" if that is what you've told him!
Reply:Drop hints. You see something in a store window then mention how much you like. Well placed hints.
